SNEAK PEEK 1: KINGS SURRENDER

(COPYRIGHTED & EDITED)

Zarah King

The parking lot was empty, so I parked near the door, then hopped out of the car. Kane got out at the same time as me, then gave me a look. I knew it was because I hadn’t waited for him to get to my door, but I was too excited to wait.

“Sorry. I’m just beyond excited. I haven’t been skating in a while. It’s the best stress reliever if you ask me,” I told him as I rushed toward the front doors.

I used my key and let us inside. We didn’t need to pay, and I had the owner set everything up for me and put on the playlist that I liked to skate to, so we were all good. I even had them get the lights set up so we could have a good time.

We walked over to where the shoe rentals were. I always left my skates here, so they had them laid out. So we just needed to get a pair for Kane. I looked in his direction with a smile.

“Please tell me you know how to skate?” I asked.

“Absolutely,” he responded.

He followed me behind the shoe counter so we could find his size. Once we grabbed the size he needed, we went back out onto the floor. We both put on our skates, then slowly got onto the floor. I did a slow lap around for the first time and Kane followed suit. Once I felt comfortable, I skated backward and swayed my hips to the music.

“Oh” by Ciara was playing. I threw my hands up in the air and closed my eyes as I sang the song obnoxiously. I could hear Kane laughing while he skated alongside me before I felt his hands on my hips and his thick bulge pressed up against my ass.

“Don’t panic, baby, or we will surely fall,” he said in a soothing tone.

I relaxed back into him as we skated together like a well-synchronized dance. I couldn’t help but smile because it had been a while since I felt this good in a man’s arms. It felt like I could let go of my worries when I was with him. I didn’t have to question whether or not he had me. I was certain he did.

“Tell me who Zarah is. Shit, I want to know what others think they know but they truly don’t,” he asked.

I peeked over my shoulder in his direction and then smiled before pulling from the comfort of his body and spinning around to face him while he continued to skate backward.

“You tell me what you see and I’ll tell you if you’re right,” I retorted.

Kane nodded and then smiled before gesturing for us to go over to the side to sit down. I followed suit and took a seat on the benches along the wall with him.

“Baby, you gotta act like we’re in our thirties,” he said.

I couldn’t help but laugh. “Let me find out you aren’t in shape. I just knew you could keep up.”

His laugh played over my skin, causing a shiver to run up my spine. This man was just perfect. I had never met a man with a perfect laugh, but he had it.

“Stop stalling. I’m waiting. I can’t wait to hear what you see,” I told him.

Kane leaned forward onto his knees and clasped his hands.

“You sure you ready for that?” he asked with a smile.

The question alone almost had me second-guessing whether the question was too deep for our date and if I was ready to hear whatever he was going to say. I had already put it out there now and it was no turning back.

“Let’s hear it,” I told him.

“I see strength. That’s the outer layer. You have an air of I don’t need you and that you can play the same game the next person can. But if you move past that, I see the desire to feel real love. The shit that you don’t have to second guess if someone is there to hurt you or truly love you. Did I get some of it right? Because it’s way more to you than just those few things,” he asked.

I turned away briefly to hide how vulnerable his answer made me. Everything he mentioned was true. I felt the need to protect myself and others at all times. But, I also felt the desire for something real was what all women wanted and needed. I wasn’t the exception. The difference between me and them was I would tolerate no one thinking they could pull the wool over on me.

I glanced back in his direction with a smile and hoped there were no traces of the soft and vulnerable version of me. Kane reached out and cupped my chin to bring my eyes back to his.

“Nah, where did you just go? Leave the armor at home. I wouldn’t invest all this time with you if it was just for a game. I want more and I need more. Are you going to give it to me?” he asked.

He reached his free arm out and wrapped it around my waist, then pulled me closer. That gesture alone had me ready to moan aloud. If this man kept it up, there would be no more armor to put up. I looked away again as a lone tear slid down my cheek. A fear had settled in that even I couldn’t control.

“Hey, I’m not trying to push you further than you’re ready to go. That’s not my intent,” he said as he returned my eyes to his.

I didn’t want to think anymore; I leaned forward and pressed my lips against his. Then climbed into his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck to deepen the kiss. This was the space where I felt most confident in my sexuality. I knew how far I could go when it came to sex. Your heart was unpredictable, and I wasn’t ready to take the gamble just yet. Although I was certain I had already lost the silent battle for the keys to it. Kane owned it entirely.

The only piece of me left was my body, and I planned to serve it up to him on a silver platter with hope he came hungry.
